Workplace Accidents: Advice for Staying Safe on the Job

Staying safe on the job is a big topic, especially with the recent decline in the economy. Now more than ever, HR representatives want people who are able to stay safe on the job. Millions of Americans each year fall victim to workplace accidents. Some are lucky, if you will, and only get a light bruise or scrape. Others may lose a limb, have a life-altering injury, or even suffer death due to workplace carelessness. If you want to avoid calling a workplace accident attorney, then you should take the proper safety precautions and make sure that you stay safe on the job. So how can you stay safe on your job? Use common sense.

This is the most important job advice that anyone can give. If you've been the victim of an at-work accident, before you call up a batch of attorneys to take your case, ask yourself this: Did I use common sense on the job and follow every safety precaution? If the answer is yes, a workplace accident lawyer is much more likely to take on your case, and you're much more likely to win. So how can you use common sense to prevent accidents?

Don't handle hazardous materials unless absolutely necessary. If you don't have a license for hazardous materials, you probably shouldn't be handling them. If you don't have a license for handling hazardous materials, and you are asked to handle them, follow your employers' directions exactly, as well as any directions that may be on the label. Ask your employer directly you have any questions, no matter how odd you think that they may be.

Don't horseplay on the job, especially if you're in a situation where you could be put in danger. You may think that the word horseplay only belongs next to the pool, but it belongs on the job as well.

Another point that most experienced on the job accident attorneys will advise is to know what your personal limits are, and keep them. Even with the dwindling economy, many people are overworked and are working overtime. Knowing what your personal limits are is essential to succeed on any job, regardless of what it is. In addition to knowing what your personal limits are, know what the boundaries are of your particular job. Don't stress yourself out by taking on extra work that you shouldn't.

Example: you are an electrician. Your primary job is to hang lights. Your boss asks you to take on a task you don't know how to do. Instead of being honest, and saying you can't do it, you surpass your limits and you get hurt doing it. This isn't to say that you shouldn't take on jobs that are not within your job description per say, but you should know your limits and what you can do. If you do something you are not able or supposed to do, that means that a workplace accident lawyer is going to be that much less likely to be able to take your case and represent you well.

Here's the advice that you'll probably love to hear: rest well. Call off sick when you need to.

Getting good sleep is essential to preforming well on the job. Many people find themselves going 6,000 directions or more at once, and they may find that they're unable to unwind and sleep well because of it. Try and do nothing strenuous about an hour before bedtime, to allow your mind to relax and unwind. Adults should be getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep each night, and more if you need it, as each adult needs their own, individual amount of rest. Going to work tired decreases how much you'll be able to work efficiently, and can even put you in danger.

In addition to resting well, call off sick when you need to. Don't try and come in if you're sneezing and have a temperature of 102. You won't feel good, and your co-workers certainly won't appreciate it. Be sure you call off in compliance with your company's policies, and don't misuse the privilege.

If you have been hurt on the job, and you followed all of these criteria exactly, then you may be entitled to workplace compensation. There are many workplace injury lawyers that are available that can take your case and inform you of your rights and what actions you may take. You have the right to stay safe at work.
